Clara Rose Band @ The Depot
Jun 9 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

After a brief sabbatical in 2016, we are pleased to announce the return of Clara Rose to the beautiful North West for our 21st Festival.

Powerful, sassy & soulful, The Clara Rose Band is always a live experience not to be missed !

Clara Rose, Danny Boy Jazz & Blues Festival, Limavady

Clara Rose will be appearing at Danny Boy Jazz & Blues Festival, Limavady

Unforgettable powerful vocals, carefully crafted songs and water-tight band. Authentic roots n’ blues with a pinch of folk.

For Clara Rose it has always been about ‘the song’. On her mother’s knee, the school choir getting onto ‘the telly’, winning an All-Ireland medal at the age of 12… the inevitable ‘all-girls indie rock band’ in her teens followed by her first blues outfit with Mick Fay, ‘Jungle Train’ who rocked various stages of N.U.I Maynooth where she completed her music degree.

She then took it up a notch by releasing her critically acclaimed debut album “A Portfolio” (2010) and live E.P “Queen of the Late Night Radio” (2014). Successful collaborations with blues harmonica legend Don Baker included a guest appearance on his 2013 album, ‘My Songs, My Friends’ and a collaborative album entitled ‘Baker Rose’ featuring original songs from the pair (2016).

With acoustic guitar in hand Clara Rose has been on the road with The Clara Rose Band and with The Don Baker Band playing shows & festivals nationwide, across Europe and even finding some blues joints to hear her dulcet tones in the U.S.A and London. She has shared stages with Eleanor McEvoy, Henry McCullough, Paul Brady, The Stunning, Brian Kennedy & Mary Coughlan to name a few.

2017 sees Clara Rose embark on recording her second solo album with her band. Her new music has taken a turn in the road, steering more towards melodic folk/roots but still tinted with the blues and always with ‘that’ unmistakable voice, the songstress: Clara Rose.

All releases available: www.cdbaby.com, iTunes, Spotify

Hotpress – Jackie Hayden: “Smouldering set from blues – folk singer…Backed by a sterling bunch of Irish musicians … Rose brings a raw rootsy blues edge to the vocals on her enticing folk and folk rock”

The Clandestinos @ Limavady Cricket & Rugby Club
Jun 9 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The Clandestinos formed in 2014 in their hometown of Galway. Their intention was to celebrate and pay tribute to the much loved music of Reggae, Ska and Latin and to bring its live atmosphere and vibe to Irish audiences.

From classic Jamaican roots reggae, the British ska and punk artists it helped influence, to the Latin tinged sounds implemented by the likes of Manu Chao and Buena Vista Social Club, The Clandestinos fuse all of this together in their 7-piece live show with the agenda being to get the high spirits up and to make people move !

Having started out as a more minimal affair in their stage set up, the completed line-up now comprises of acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums and is completed by a trio of saxophone, trumpet and trombone. Expect Classic Roots favourites, Ska and Punk-Reggae from 80’s era London, groovy Latin and a hint of dub here and there for good measure.

We can’t wait…!!!  Let’s see those old-time Ska dancers out in force !

Here’s a flavour from Bandwagon TV, which specialises in stripped down acoustic numbers, performed in that caravan off Father Ted – the one with Graham Norton in it…

‘Leave Without A Trace’, the second single from the album ‘Ghosts In The Fire’ features the power rock trio doing what they do best – with big drums, big guitars and powerful vocal harmonies. Martello Jazz Band @ Frank Owens : Yard
Jun 10 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

martello

The Martello Jazz Band was formed in the autumn of 1985 by a group of enthusiastic musicians who had played previously in other bands.

Their aim was to produce a sound reminiscent of the Dixieland bands which were commonplace in the New Orleans of the 1920’s and 1930’s, but also to stamp on it their own brand of drive and flair.

The resulting music is fresh and full of vitality, while still retaining the traditional flavour.

This recipe has been successful in introducing a wide range of audiences to this form of music, even those who previously did not consider jazz to be to their taste !

For those of you lucky enough to catch the Willie Byrne Band at our 2014 Festival, we’re pretty sure you will want to hear them again…

For those of you who missed it, here’s Willie’s story so far in his own words…

I started playing the Guitar at 16yrs of age, my Dad bought me my first guitar, an Antoria Les Paul copy.

I still play this guitar for TINN LIZZY gigs and it’s pristine. Looks really pretty too.

After playing in several garage Bands I got the lead guitar gig with THE PETER BECKET BAND.

This was my first real outfit, doing University gigs some TV stuff (BBC 1 CAMPUS ROCK supporting Paul Brady)

Gigs like the Errigle Inn residency Thursday nights. Circa ’78 ’79 80

Then stints with several groups, KATMANDU, CLOUDS, a two piece with EDDIE FRIEL and numerous stand ins with APARTMENT.

Formed my own Band in ’82 opened twice for Philip Lynott on his Solo in Soho Tour.

I auditioned for the Van Morrison gig. Van not present unfortunately. Played in various bands over the next few years.

Went on an American Tour ’91 followed by periods in Portugal ’93 ’95 France ’94 Austria ’96.

More recently a stint with THEM and my own Band doing the Rory Gallagher Tribute, etc.

My main influences are Rory Gallagher, Led Zeppelin, Gary Moore.

The great local guitarist Jim Armstrong was very important to me and many other young guitarists because we could go to see him playing in the POUND CLUB every Saturday afternoon

My other influential great musicians are Jimi Hendrix, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Thin Lizzy.

More recently I’ve been inspired by guys like ROBBEN FORD and ERIC JOHNSON.

The Band :

Willie Byrne – Guitar & Vocals
Stephen Clayton – Bass and Vocals
Brian Warnock – Drums

Errol & Ted (Charity Event) @ Keady Clachan
Jun 11 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Errol Walsh is a multi-award winning singer, songwriter, and guitarist, born in the picturesque seaside village of Portstewart, Northern Ireland.

His repertoire is filled with delightful stories of his travels and as well as original compositions he includes the works of other artists such as Taj Mahal, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Mississippi John Hurt, Steve Bruton, Jesse Winchester, Guy Clark and Kieran Kane to name a few.

Errol continues to write and perform his songs to discerning audiences. Perhaps the rugged but beautiful landscapes of Ireland, Canada, Scotland and Norway have helped add a touch of magic to this spell-binding performer.  He effortlessly and naturally ranges through a range of contemporary styles – Country Blues, Swing, popular etc. with a maturity and vocal control that is awesome.  In solo mode he projects an enigmatic, charismatic intimacy, he takes his acoustic guitar and delivery of song to an articulate and poetic level. He is a consummate story-teller and creates a soulful, emotional mood with a great sense of humanity and beauty to his delivery.

Errol has become a regular at the Danny Boy Jazz & Blues Festival in Limavady, and has since collaborated with Rory Clements, providing the lyrics to Rory’s melody for the recording of “Queen of the Glens“.

Ted Ponsonby hails from Letterkenny, Donegal and as well as song-writing, is also a Recording Producer & Engineer.

Ted’s specialities include Acoustic and electric guitars, and the Dobro resonator.

As a founding member, Ted played with the renowned show band The Rascals during the 1970’s.  After selling the Rascals name to the Wilder brothers in the early 1980’s, Ted has gone on to become one of the top session musicians and producers in Ireland.  Although originally a rocker, Ted has changed his musical style considerably, and today plays more blues, country and traditional music around his native Letterkenny.  He also continues to play live gigs in venues around the country on a regular basis – and luckily for us, Limavady is among those venues !

Over the years he has played and recorded in very good company including Dolores Keane, Sean Keane, The Henry Girls, Andy White, Freddie White, Kieran Goss, Frances Black, Maura O’Connell, Arty McGlynn, and many other noted Irish musicians – including a short stint with Van Morrison.

Ted can be seen strutting his funky stuff with the Rascals on Youtube below.  He is the yellow-trousered Reggae singing lead guitarist and vocalist…!

The Men Who Knew Too Much @ Alexander Arms
Jun 11 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The Men That Knew Too Much

The Men Who Knew Too Much

These “well informed men” play a mixture of blues, alt country, cajun and folk with an odd Hawaian number thrown in for good measure!

Featuring Percy Robinson (guitar, dobro, vocals), Egon Callery (guitar, vocals) and Sean McCarron (saxophone, percussion), these 3 outstanding musicians play a diverse mix and never fail to impress with their laid back style.

Percy Robinson (guitar & dobro & vocals) has played with some of the best in rock, country and blues, and has been christened the best steel guitarist in the world by no less a luminary than Cowboy Jack Clements (likely to be a relative of Rory !).  And Clements should know – he has worked with stars such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, U2 and many, many others.

Percy Robinson

Percy Robinson

During the showband era Robinson toured the dance halls of Ireland and Britain with The Cotton Mill Boys and Gloria and Mississippi.  There followed a period during which he played a key role in bands such as Rule The Roost, Raw, The Gooseberries and The Blue Valentines.

Throughout his music career Robinson has been much in demand as a session musician contributing to albums by artists such as Terence Trent D’Arby, Townes Van Zandt, Paul Brady, Bap Kennedy and Mary Black to name but a few. He has also built a reputation as a sound engineer and producer, running his own studio.

Today, in addition to his work with The Men That Knew Too Much, Percy is also a regular member of The Henry McCullough Band.

Sean McCarron (saxophone & percussion) is originally from Strabane and now lives in Lisfannon with his wife Mary.

He has been in bands since his early days starting with a group called Quarterdeck.   Sean is a session musician who plays with many well known musicians.  He plays the saxophone with five different live bands throughout the Northwest and beyond.

Sean holds the rather unnerving honour of being the only man in Ireland to survive after being hit by three vehicles in succession…

Egon Callery (guitar & vocals), originally of Dutch descent, but now almost a native Irishman !   Egon can also be found playing in many different guises across the North West, and has shared the stage with notable company.  A man of mystery…!

Clara Rose Band @ Douglas' Bar
Jun 11 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm
